An Email Marketing Glossary Entry

What is a Bulk Folder?

The bulk folder, also knows as the spam folder, is the area in email clients (on- and off-line) where messages that are considered spam end up. In most cases, the user has control over the rules that route incoming emails, including those rules that determine which message should be marked as spam. However, email server-wide rules are usually responsible for the bulk of the messages that get routed to the bulk folder.

How to Avoid Bulk Folders in Email Marketing?

Email marketers have very little control over how emails are routed once they reach their destination. There is no way to guarantee that outgoing emails are going to land on the recipient's inbox. Some general precautions, good technical skills, restraints on the language and a reliable ESP will help in ensuring that the messages will reach their intended destinations.
